About Louise Newton, MSW, LCSW, SEP

J. Louise Newton (she/her/hers) is a passionate and compassionate advocate, student, teacher, clinician, and community organizer with over 20 years of experience.

Louise holds a B.A. in Psychology with a minor in Sociology from the University of North Carolina at Asheville. Louise also holds a MSW from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is a guest lecturer at both the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Social Work, as well as the School of Medicine. Louise thrives in her role as a leader and mentor, serving as a Clinical Field Instructor to the UNC School of Social Work, NC State University School of Social Work, and Smith College of Social Work. In 2020, Louise was awarded the Agency Recognition Award from the UNC School of Social Work for her clinical field placement and instruction through the MindPath Care Centers Gender and Sexual Diversity Program.

Louise maintains her clinical licensure in North Carolina as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker while having obtained an additional 800 hours of clinical and professional development coursework in addition to her graduate and licensure requirements. Louise is a member of the National Association of Social Work and a member of the World Association of Transgender Health. Additionally, Louise holds a certification as a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner and Teaching Assistant to the Somatic Experiencing Trauma Institute. Louise has completed Dr. Diane Poole Heller’s Dynamic Attachment and Repatterning Experience clinical education program.

While keeping herself steeped in her 18 years of clinical work, Louise also excels as a clinical administrator and program developer. Her drive to have her administrative work be informed in every way by her psychotherapy training and practice makes her a unique and valued Clinical Director of Psychotherapy at MindPath Care Centers. In 2014, Louise co-founded the Gender and Sexual Diversity Program (GSDP) – a clinical program unlike any other in the Southeast as it combines NASW approved clinical training series, clinical practicum placements for graduate students, pro bono therapy services, and advocacy to remove barriers LGBTQ+ community members face when attempting to access health care. Louise has worked in the nonprofit sector as well as the University sector over the span of her career prior to joining MindPath Care Centers in 2013.

In her personal life, Louise is, first and foremost, a mother. She is also a musician and in a previous life toured in broken down vans across the East Coast. Living a much simpler life now, Louise loves to tend to her garden, spend time with bio- and chosen family, and cook her Granny Louise’s recipes with her son and Pekingese in tow.
