About W. Scott Griffies, MD, DFAPA

W. Scott Griffies M.D., DFAPA, is the Medical Director at Community Psychiatry a member of the Office of the Chief Medical Officer along with Dr. Elise Herman and Dr. Priyanka. He is also the Director of Clinical Education and Director of the Mind-Brain-Body Center. He has over 25 years of experience in clinical and psychiatric leadership, with a career focused on psychosomatic medicine, administrative psychiatry, and program development. Prior to coming to MindPath, he was the Medical Director for Psychiatric Services at Duke Raleigh Hospital. Dr. Griffies is currently still on faculty at Duke as a Consulting Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences where he supervises and teaches psychiatric residents. He is board certified in Otolaryngology-HNS, General Psychiatry, Psychosomatic Medicine and is certified in psychoanalysis from the New Orleans Psychoanalytic Institute. Early in his career, he was a Lieutenant Commander in the Navy where he was awarded the Naval Achievement Award and the Navy and Marine Corps Overseas Service Ribbon.

Dr. Griffies was also with the Louisiana State Health Science Center Department of Psychiatry in New Orleans for 20 years, where he served as the Director of the LSU Consult Liaison Psychiatry Service, Director of the Emergency Psychiatry Service and Residency Training Director. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, he played a leadership role at a local and state level, had a large role in reestablishing mental health infrastructure in the city and Louisiana, and developed the LSU Psychiatry Emergency and Crisis Services in New Orleans, which was the city’s main source of behavioral health crisis stabilization. In 2008, he started the New Orleans Center for Mind-Body Health in downtown New Orleans; which after concerns of the vulnerability for more hurricanes in New Orleans in 2015, he sold and relocated to North Carolina.

Dr. Griffies’ education includes an M.D. and residency from the LSU School of Medicine, and a residency at the Oakland Naval Hospital. He has also been named as a Top Psychiatrist in America annually since 2009 and has written 14 academic psychiatry papers focused on neuropsychodynamics of mind-brain-body illnesses and a chapter in a book on psychosomatic conditions. To Dr. Griffies, MindPath is a unique outpatient organization in that it has the strong three-leg stool commonly cited in clinical academic programs, focused on patient care, education, and clinical trials and a dedication to extending access to behavioral healthcare. He is excited about where MindPath has come and its future. His vision is to develop clinical programs and infrastructure that delivers the highest quality of mindcare.
