What is Relationship or Marriage Counseling?

Relationship or Marriage counseling is a type of psychotherapy that can help couples pinpoint issues, resolve conflicts, and strengthen their relationships. In most cases, this kind of counseling is provided by licensed marriage and family therapists.

Every couple experiences periods of conflict, tension, disagreement, or confusion at some point. Some of the most common reasons that couples seek counseling include:

  • Communication difficulties
  • Anger and conflict
  • Sexual difficulties
  • Disagreement about child rearing and blended families
  • Financial disagreements
  • Substance abuse
  • Considering or engaging in infidelity
  • Contemplating separation or divorce

When left unresolved, these issues can create stress, anxiety, or depression for one or both partners. Relationship difficulties can also be exacerbated by outside factors, such as a preexisting mental illness or a stressful life event, like moving, job loss, or a death in the family.

What are the benefits of relationship counseling?

Counseling carries a wide range of benefits for couples, depending on the issues that are developing in the relationship and each partner’s specific needs.

  • Equip couples to improve their communication to better resolve future conflicts
  • Help partners understand the true sources of their conflict and negative feelings
  • Pinpoint smaller concerns in the relationship that may grow into bigger issues without intervention
  • Help both partners understand each others’ needs and encourage intimacy
  • Help determine what is missing in the relationship and help bring back some of the “spark”
  • Some couples may know what their problem is, but not how to resolve it, so counseling can help them proceed toward resolution
  • In more serious situations, help determine whether divorce is the best option, and how to proceed with a separation

Counseling can even benefit couples who think the relationship is going well! It can help partners better understand each other, communicate more effectively, or prepare for the next step in their lives, such as a big move, changing jobs, or having their first child.

What happens in relationship/marital counseling?

When you go to a counseling session, you and your partner usually will go together. However, if one partner refuses to go to the sessions, the other can still attend.

During these sessions, you will work with your counselor to:

  • Talk about the good and bad parts of your relationship
  • Determine and understand sources of conflict
  • Learn to identify problems without blaming each other
  • Develop better, more open communication
  • Improve problem-solving skills
  • Learn to discuss problems and differences calmly and rationally

Some things may be difficult to talk about, or may stir up strong emotions. You may spend more or less time in your sessions talking, or you and your partner may argue or yell at each other. One reason why the counselor is there is so he or she can be a buffer or referee between the two of you and keep you on track.

Counseling tends to be short-term, although it depends on the couple and their situation. You may require only a few sessions, or you may need several months of discussion and effort before your situation improves or you understand what to do next. Relationships take a lot of work! Sometimes it may take time to move forward from your anger and other feelings.

Like other forms of psychotherapy, your counselor may give you and your partner “homework” to practice what you learned during the session. This may include communication exercises or specific activities. In the next session, he or she may ask how this homework went.
