DURHAM, N.C. – April 29, 2020 – MindPath Care Centers, North Carolina’s largest outpatient mental and behavioral healthcare provider, is pleased to announce the appointment of W. Scott Griffies, M.D., Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association (DFAPA), to Medical Director.  In his new role, Dr. Griffies will be responsible for all clinical practices and policies and will assume the Chairmanship of the Quality and Standards Boards (QSB).  Dr. Griffies joined the team as Associate Medical Director and Director of Clinical Education and Development late last year and will continue to be responsible for ensuring the delivery of quality patient care through a new clinical education program that is currently in development, lead the recruitment efforts for hiring clinical providers, and evaluate new treatment options and medical innovations.

Prior to joining MindPath Care Centers, Dr. Griffies was an Associate Professor of Psychiatry with Duke Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, and the Medical Director of the Psychosomatic Medicine/Consult-Liaison Psychiatry Service at Duke Raleigh Hospital.  He was also a supervising attending for residents in the Duke Psychiatry Outpatient Clinic.  Dr. Griffies is boarded in Otolaryngology-HNS, General Psychiatry, Psychosomatic Medicine and certified in psychoanalysis from the New Orleans Psychoanalytic Institute.  In New Orleans, he was a faculty member at Louisiana State University (LSU) Department of Psychiatry and Psychosomatic Medicine Fellowship, Residency Training Director and the Medical Director of the New Orleans Center for Mind-Body Health.  His main academic and clinical interest has been in understanding how the mind, brain and body interact resulting in problematic physical and somatic symptoms known as functional neurological somatic disorders.  Additionally, he has worked to combine inpatient consult-liaison and outpatient psychiatry in a teaching and clinical research environment.

Dr. Griffies was recognized as the 2018 Honored Professor by Duke residents.  He has received honors from the LSU School of Medicine, Alpha Epsilon Delta Premedical Honorary Society, is a Diplomat in Psychosomatic Medicine, and a recipient of the Naval Health Profession Scholarship.  He completed his medical school and psychiatry training at LSU in New Orleans, Louisiana.
