Most Prestigious Award Conferred by the Governor of North Carolina
DURHAM, N.C. – August 3, 2020 – MindPath Care Centers, North Carolina’s largest outpatient mental and behavioral healthcare provider, is pleased to announce that Dr. James A. Smith, III, DLFAPA, Medical Director Emeritus, received the Order of the Long Leaf Pine Award for his exemplary service to the State of North Carolina. This prestigious Award recognizes individuals who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to make a significant impact in the communities they serve, while strengthening North Carolina. The Order of the Long Leaf Pine is the highest award for state service granted by the Office of the Governor.
“I am honored to be recognized by Governor Roy Cooper and to have the opportunity to care for individuals in our community who suffer with mental or behavioral health conditions,” said Dr. Smith. “We need to take care of each other, especially in today’s world where we find ourselves in the middle of a pandemic that is causing additional anxiety overall to all of us.”
“Dr. Smith conveys excellence in all that he does, from treating patients, to sharing his knowledge and expertise with those fighting alcohol addiction, mental health concerns of those in correctional facilities and educating minorities about prostate cancer,” said Dr. Scott Griffies, Medical Director, MindPath Care Centers. “His compassion, professionalism and humble-nature put him in a category of individuals that stand alone.”
Dr. Smith was Medical Director at MindPath Care Centers from 2005 until his retirement in 2019. In addition to MindPath Care Centers, Dr. Smith spent thirty years with the Wake County Alcoholism Treatment Center as a staff Psychiatrist and over twenty years with the North Carolina Department of Correction as Chief Psychiatrist at Central Prison Mental Health. He also serves as the current President of the North Carolina Minority Prostate Cancer Awareness Action Team.
Among the honors and awards the Governor of North Carolina can bestow, none is more valued than The Order of the Long Leaf Pine by the Long Leaf Pine Society. Since its creation in 1963, it has been presented to honor persons who have a proven record of service to the State of North Carolina or some other special achievement, and to others as a gesture of friendship and good will. Persons named to The Order become North Carolina “Ambassadors” with their names and award dates recorded on a Roster maintained by The Order of the Long Leaf Pine Society. They may then enroll in the Society’s Directory and become Society “Honorees” entitled to display Society insignia.
